What that means

GTA 6 gameplay

The phone and its apps

The phone is not a menu with a skin on it. Jason and Lucia hold it, look at it, and have different apps and different people they follow, and the social feed is a genuine source of leads rather than set dressing.

A held object, not a menu with a skin

Jason and Lucia physically take the phone out, hold it and look at it, which means using it takes time and occupies your hands. A menu is free. A phone is not. Scanning a parked car with WAINK while standing in the street is a thing other people can see you doing.

It also means the phone is present in the world rather than layered over it. GTA V's phone was a rectangle in the corner of the screen. This one belongs to a character, and which character is holding it changes what is on it.

The feed is a lead generator

The social feed carries posts, video and live streams, and browsing it can surface random events and hideouts across Leonida. Scrolling is a way of finding things to do, which is a neat inversion of what doom-scrolling normally means.

That is a genuinely different answer to the open-world discovery problem. The usual solution is to cover the map in icons, which tells you where everything is and removes any reason to look. Putting leads in a feed means the world stays unmarked and the information arrives the way information actually arrives. Second-hand, incomplete, and from someone who was there.

Each of them has their own

Different apps installed, different accounts followed. Switching character switches phone, which makes the phone a characterisation device as much as a menu.

Since switching between Jason and Lucia is free and constant, this quietly doubles the amount of the world you can see. Two feeds, two sets of people worth following, and presumably two different pictures of what is happening in Leonida on any given day. It is also the cheapest possible way to tell you who these two people are, because you can simply read what they have chosen to look at.

What the apps actually do for you

  • WAINK reads a parked car before you touch it. Value, registration cost, locks, alarm, tracker, and the tool you need.
  • RydeMe hails a ride so you can cross the state without driving.
  • Scooter Bros delivers a vehicle to where you are, with the driver turning up on an e-scooter.
  • Banking handles the joint account, though deposits themselves are a manual trip to an ATM.
  • Fitness prompts training, which feeds the condition system on both protagonists.
  • Messaging runs a live thread between Jason and Lucia that is part of the relationship system.
  • Snapmatic returns for photographs, now sitting inside the wider social feed.

Read as a list, that is most of the game's connective tissue running through one object. Travel, crime, money, fitness, the relationship and discovery all touch the phone, which is why it is worth learning properly rather than treating as somewhere the map lives.

Where the phone came from

GTA IV introduced the phone as a contacts list you were occasionally obliged to answer. GTA V turned it into a menu with a browser attached. GTA 6 is the first entry where the phone is doing genuine gameplay work. WAINK is a scouting tool, the feed is a quest source, and the delivery apps are a transport system.

The satire has moved with it, and Rockstar has been deliberate about how. The studio has said it avoided topical political references on the grounds that development cycles are long and specific jokes rot, so the phone parodies the shape of modern platforms rather than naming anyone currently in the news. The ride app, the delivery service, the endless feed, the influencer economy. That is the difference between something that will still read in 2030 and something that dates before launch.
